The 30th Annual Grand View Firehouse 50

The Firehouse 50 is a bicycle raod race of 50.5 miles beginning and ending in Grand View, Wisconsin. This race is on black top roads winding through the pristine Chequamegon National Forest around Lake Namakagon and Lake Owen. It passes through the townships of Grand View, Namakagon, Cable and Drummond.

Race Information

Registration will remain open until 1/2 hr before race start

There is no registration limit. Race start time is 10:30 a.m.

  • -Chip timing is used. Place the chip on the left ankle or as instructed in your race packet
  • -All participants must register, plus be wearing a chip and hip number before participating in the race.
  • -Failure to wear your chip, or wear it properly, may result in no finishing time assigned to you.
  • -Your timing chip will be available for pickup on race morning near the registration table
  • -Failure to register before participating is an automatic DSQ
  • -Race start line is at the Great Divide Ball Park (see course map)
  • -The staging area will be about 1/4 mile north of the start line on a black topped side street. The race will begin with a slow rolling start and the race start time is when the first rider crosses the start line. The public address system will be near so that you will not miss any last minute announcements.
  • -Those warming up should be careful as other riders are already finishing their event and the finish line is in use. Please warm up traveling south on County “D” after all other events have started, or East on Highway “63”. No warm ups will be allowed west of the finish line street
  • -Water stations will be at the 12 and 35 mile mark
  • -Food stations at approximately the 17, 25 & 40 mile mark
  • -Finish line station will be complete with cool down rags, food, water and energy drink.
  • -First aid personnel and sweep vehicles will be throughout the course
  • -Use of audio playback devices such as iPods or other entertainment devices is prohibited.
  • -The course is open to traffic. The centerline rule will be strictly enforced. Riders who cross the center line will be disqualified.*
  • -Motorcycle escorts throughout the course
  • -Race day questions should begin at the registration table. If they are unable to answer your questions, they will page the director to help. Questions during the race can be directed to the announcer and he will be able to page the proper personnel to assist. Please do not ask the announcer to page friends or relatives.
  • -Shirts to all participants
  • -Trophy to top three finishers male and female
  • -Age division awards for the first three in each category, as identified in the race records.
  • -Age division awards are mailed on Monday after the event

* If any DSQ would affect the top three winners, the award will be held until the issue is addressed. If the DSQ for the rider stands, the next eligible participant will be granted the award.

Changing Events

You may change events up to 7/15/10. Absolutely no changes after that date.

500 Mile Club

Those that have competed in a previous Firehouse 50, Fantasy 50 or time trial event will be eligible to receive a commemorative pin once they have accumulated 500 miles.

1000 Mile Club

Those that have competed in a previous Firehouse 50, Fantasy 50 or any time trial event will be eligible to receive a commemorative trophy once they have accumulated 1000 miles.

Handle Bars - Packs - Prefered Start

The use of certain handlebars is not allowed in the preferred start or in any pack. The following is directly from the United States Cycling Federation general rules:

4. The handlebars and stem must be fashioned in such a way as to present no danger. Their ends shall be solidly plugged to lessen chance of injury. Handle bars used for steering with ends that point forward and upward that provide support for the rider’s forearm are permitted in time trial and pursuit events
.

The use of any illegal handlebars in a pack is grounds for disqualification and will not be allowed in the preferred start.

If you have questions concerning the legality of your handlebars and intend to be in a pack or preferred start position, please contact us to arrange in advance the approval of your bars.

Firehouse Fantasy 50

Enjoy the beauty of the Firehouse 50 course, with a short cut. The 33-mile course winds through much of the same Firehouse 50 route and crosses the same finish line. The Fantasy 50 miles will count towards the 500-mile club.

THERE IS NO REGISTRATION LIMIT

* Chip timing will be used. Place chip as instructed in your race packet
* Your timing chip will be available for pickup on race morning near the registration table
* The same registration rule applies
* Failure to wear your chip, or wear it properly, may result in a time not be assigned to your finish.
* Race start time is 8 am
* Registration will remain open until 1/2 hour before race start
* Race begins and ends at the same lines as the Firehouse 50
* Staging area is on the blacktop road at the Great Divide Ball Park
* The first water stop will be at about the 8 and 15 mile mark
* Food stations at about the 22-mile mark.
* First aid and sweep vehicles will be on the course
* The food station at the finish line will be complete with cool down rags, water, energy drink and other food.
* Participants may warm up anywhere, following all road rules and courtesies.
* Fantasy 50 participant shirts to everyone
* Awards to overall winners male and female and tandem
* Age Division awards to first in each age group. See Firehouse Records for the age division categories.
*Age division awards are mailed the Monday after the event

Time Trials

Time trials allow riders to race or tour the same course as the Firehouse 50 at their own pace or against the clock without the congestion of the main road race.

Individual Time Trials

Registration deadline is July 25, 2009 or until filled.

This event often fills early.


* Chip timing will be used. Place your chip as instructed in your race packet.
* Your timing chip will be available near the start area. You will be assisted with applying your chip as you near the start line.
* The same registration rules apply
* Failure to wear your chip, or wear it improperly, may result in a time not being assigned to your finish
* Two riders depart every 30 seconds
* Race start times will be assigned by the timing company
* See below regarding multiple event riders and their start times.
* Participants should check in allowing themselves ample time to identify their start time and have a chance to warm up. Participants check in at the same registration table as other riders.
* Individual time trial participants are not allowed to draft.*
* Registration is limited to the first 100 registered
* The course is open to normal traffic and riders are expected to ride near the right shoulder
* Awards will be given to the overall male and female winner
* Age division awards will be given to the first in each age group. The age divisions will be the same as the Firehouse Fifty and are identified in the Firehouse Records.

USCF Drafting Rules

(b) No rider shall take pace behind another rider closer than 25 meters (80 feet) ahead or 2 meters (7 feet) to the side. (A rider who is observed taking pace shall receive a time penalty.)

© No two riders may ride abreast other than when attempting to pass and such attempts shall be maintained beyond a distance of 500 meters. An attempt to pass may be repeated an unlimited number of times, but each time a challenging rider fails in his attempt, he shall drop back to 25 meters behind the challenged rider before renewing his attempt.

Drafting violations will be accepted from course monitors, motorcycle escorts or other riders. A time penalty will be applied if multiple reports of the rider violating the rule occurs. If the violator would be eligible for an award, the award will be held until the issue is addressed. If it is found that the rider is in violation, the award will be given to the next eligible rider and the violator’s time will be adjusted. The adjustment to the time will be determined by the distance and frequency of the violation.

Recumbent Riders

* Chip timing is used. Place your chip as instructed in your race packet
* The same registration rule applies
* Failure to wear your chip may result in no time being assigned to your finish.
* HPV riders are part of the individual time trial event
* HPV riders will depart at the end of this event
* HPV riders are eligible for a separate award category, if entered in the individual time trial event. Award will be to the overall winner
* HPV riders may participate in the Firehouse 50 or Fantasy 50 but will not be eligible for an award
* All HPV riders must indicate that they are riding an HPV regardless of the event entered

Team Time Trials

Registration deadline for team time trial entries is 7/15/10 or until filled. Team Time Trials have become very popular. Register early with a complete team to insure a spot.


Two and four person team time trials enable pairs or teams of riders to work together to enhance their performance.

Chip timing is used. Wear your chip on your left ankle or as instructed in your race packet.
The same registration rules as the mass race apply
Failure to wear your chip, or wear it improperly, may result in a time not being assigned to your finish

Your timing chip will be available to you at the start area. You will be assisted with applying your chip as you near your start time.


Two person time trial

* Registration is limited to the first 50 complete teams, plus 10 tandem spots are reserved.
* Incomplete team members will be transferred to the Individual Time Trial after the registration deadline. If the Individual Time Trial is full, you will be transferred to the mass race. No refunds will be made as a result of this change.
* Team members may be changed up to the registration deadline
* No refunds or transfers of changed team members, but they can move to another event.
* Teams can be male, female and mixed. Awards for each.
* Teams may draft each other, but not other teams (see USCF drafting rules)
* Team time is based on the second rider to cross the finish line
* Teams will depart every 30 seconds
* Start times will be assigned by the timing company
* Start times will be available at bib pick up
* Bib pickup will be at the registration table
* The course is open to normal traffic, riders are expected to obey all road rules and ride near the right shoulder.
* First place age division awards will be given based on the combined ages of the team (tandem) members. The divisions will be <50, 50+, 100+ and 150+. All age division awards will be mailed.
* Each team member must complete a registration and pay the required fee.

Tandems


* Tandems must be entered in the 2 person time trial to be eligible for a separate award in the category of male/female/mixed
* Awards to each category
* Tandems will depart at the end of the two person time trial event
* Departure every 30 seconds
* Tandems may not draft other riders. (See USCF drafting rules)
* All riders must identify that they are using a tandem, whether in the time trials, Firehouse 50 or Fantasy 50
* Start times will be assigned by the timing company
* Race number is to be worn by the second rider
* All riders must register and pay an entry fee

Tandems are welcome to ride in the Firehouse 50 or the Fantasy 50, but will not be eligible for an award. They also cannot be in the preferred start or ride in a pack.

Four-person team time trial

* Limited to the first 20 complete teams or registration deadline
* Incomplete team members after the registration deadline

will be transferred to the Individual Time Trial.

* If the Individual Time trial is filled, you will be transferred to the mass race. No refunds will be granted as a result of this change.
* Teams can be male, female and mixed. Awards for each.
* Mixed teams must consist of 2 males and 2 females to be eligible for an award.
* Teams may draft each other, but not other teams (see USCF drafting rules)
* Team time is based on the third finisher
* Teams will depart every 60 seconds
* Start times will be assigned by the timing company
* Start times will be available at bib pick up
* Bib pickup will be at the registration table
* The course is open to normal traffic, riders are expected to obey all road rules and ride near the right shoulder.
* Team members can be changed no later than the registration deadline
* No refunds or transfers for changed team members, but they can move to another event.
* First place age division awards will be given based on the combined ages of the team members. The divisions for 2008 will be <100, 100+ and 200+. All age division awards will be mailed.
* Each team member must complete the registration form and pay the required fee.

Riders in Multiple Events

If you intend to ride in multiple events and are in need of a very early start time, you must make that request when you send in your entry. Once any start time is assigned it will not be changed. The absolute earliest start time is 6:50 a.m. to be able to have a recorded finishing time. There will be limited spaces for early start times. Once filled, there are no options.

Registration and Bib Pickup

Begins Friday afternoon from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Grand View Fire Hall near the Town Park. Registration resumes Saturday morning at 7 a.m. at the Great Divide Ballpark, which is the race, start area.

Remember that the only registration available on Saturday morning is for the Firehouse 50, Fantasy 50 or Best of Both. All time trial new registration is closed. Bib pickup for these events will remain open until the race start time.

Other Important Information

* All Firehouse 50, Time Trial and Fantasy 50 participants must be at least 14 years of age
* Approved helmets required
* Failure to register for an event prior to participating is an automatic DSQ
* If you lost your chip or hip number, participants should return to the registration table to have new numbers issued for a $20 fee for replacing a bib and $125 if a chip is lost.
* No transfers or refunds
* All you can eat pasta feed on Friday evening during registration hours. (not included with registration fee, but a very hometown price) price includes live entertainment!
* Early morning pancake breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday in the park pavilion
* Food and beverage concessions all weekend

Grand View Firehouse Run

SUNDAY, AUGUST 1, 2010


Firehouse 15k Run

The course is primarily on black top roads, with a portion of it being gravel. The race start and finish is at the Grand View Town Park.
Race start time is 9 a.m.
There is no registration limit.

  • Water stations around the 2, 5 & 7 mile marks
  • Finish line is complete with fruit, beverage and cool down rags

Firehouse 2 mile Run

Pile on the fire trucks and ride out to the start line. Young and old alike enjoy this short run.

There will fruit, water and cool down rags available at the finish line

Race start time is

Best of Both Competition

Combine your Firehouse 50 time (road race or time trial) with your time from the 15k run to see if you are the “Best of Both”

Registration deadline for the Best of Both competition is before the Firehouse 50 start on Saturday, July 31, 2010

Registration and Bib Pickup

Registration and bib pick up for the 15k, including Best of Both participants, will begin at 8 a.m. in the Town Park.

Registration and bib pick up for the 2 mile run will begin after the start of the 15k run.

All Firehouse Run participants will receive a T-shirt and other premiums

Awards

  • -Award ceremony for both events will begin at approximately 12:30 PM
  • -Trophies to overall winners male/female of the Best of Both
  • -Oak plaques to the overall winners, male/female of the 15k and 2-mile run
  • -Best of Both participants will also receive a first year plaque and a metal date tag to those that have previously competed in this event.
  • -Medals and ribbons will be given to various age divisions (see Firehouse Run records)
